WHY AM I RUNNING? I am running for a seat on the School Board because I am deeply committed to making our Cabarrus County school system the best it can be. As both a parent and an educator, I believe in looking at the big picture of education, focusing not just on academics but also on student's overall well-being. For the past 25 years, I have been involved in education in North Carolina. It all started when I earned my Master's degree in Chemistry from UNC Charlotte. From there, I became a high school teacher in the CMS School district. Over time, I expanded my role in education, teaching at CPCC and UNC Charlotte. My involvement with the Cabarrus County School System grew when my own children began attending Cox Mill Elementary and Harold Winkler Middle schools. I have been actively involved in volunteering at their schools, emphasizing the importance of a well-rounded education for all students.
KEY AREAS OF FOCUS:
1) Managing Growth Strategically: Our county is experiencing significant growth in certain areas, but our schools haven't been able to keep pace. This leads to overcrowding and other challenges. I want to work on long-term solutions by fostering collaboration between the city, county, and school system to ensure that new developments take school needs into account.
3) Supporting Teacher Retention: Teachers are the backbone of our education system, and we need to prioritize their support and well-being. As a former teacher myself, I understand the importance of competitive compensation, personalized professional development, and access to resources. I will advocate for policies that empower and retain our dedicated educators.
2) Increasing Parental and Community Involvement: Education is a team effort, and we need everyone's help to support our students. I believe in the proverb "It takes a village to raise a child." I want to create opportunities for parents, families, local businesses, and the broader community to contribute to our schools and enrich students' educational experiences.
4) Promoting Middle School Recess: While academic performance often takes center stage, the role of recess in children's overall development is often overlooked. Research shows that recess benefits students' physical, social, emotional, and cognitive well-being. I want to ensure that middle school students have adequate time for unstructured play and relaxation, recognizing its importance in their educational journey.
Beyond these priorities, I believe in the importance of transparency, clear communication, and collaboration for a brighter future in our schools. I envision a community where the school board, parents, teachers, and administrators collaborate seamlessly to create an environment where every child can thrive. By ensuring that parents feel heard, valued, and empowered, we can build on our community's strengths, address concerns openly, and celebrate successes collectively.
I am eager to bring my experience, passion, and fresh ideas to the School Board. Together, let us work towards creating a brighter future for our children and our community through education.
